“It is likely that most of us will experience at least one diagnostic error in our lifetimes, sometimes with devastating consequences”
About the book
Delayed diagnosis, misdiagnosis, overtreatment and medical error have been experienced by people of all walks of life. More than 250,00 patients die in the USA annually due to medical error. In a world in which health is a commodity, how do we battle this?
In Dr Aswini Misro’s new book ‘Patient 2.0 – Beyond Consumer, Victim or Survivor – Navigating the Healthcare Maze’, we experience the world of these patients. From each heart-wrenching story we learn crucial lessons to become ‘Patient 2.0’; an educated patient who is an active participant in the healthcare system. Dr Aswini Misro exposes the unscrupulous and unregulated habits of the system alongside providing the solution through technology. As the founder of YouDiagnose, a clinical AI platform to aid doctors, Dr Aswini Misro believes technological integration can create a healthcare system that is patient-centred and empowering. However, the driving force for healthcare revolution is a new generation of confident and well-educated patients, which is the essence of this book.
Testimonials
This book is an innovative effort by the author to compile these real-life medical anecdotes and highlights the struggle the patients and the caregivers go through in day to day life. This book is of great help in educating the common man and creating awareness about ways to deal with them.
It further provides insight into the socio-economic impact of the profit based medical practice in the current era. I look forward to the new exposures in the medical industry that the author might provide in the next sequel of this book.
The other important aspect of this book is about the “out of pocket expenditure” and “medical bankruptcy

From the chapter, "Red-flag symptom – The warning sound of a ticking time tomb "
The dangerous aftermath of mere assumptions and false re-assurance to the patient cannot be overemphasized. If he had been diagnosed in time, a small surgery would have probably given him a much better quality of life. Radhika continued, “Since the last 18 years, Daddy manages with a walking stick with a weak left side. He has developed several infections on his left cornea. He underwent two operations on his eye and one corneal transplant in the USA 2 years ago. Even though he is always tough in the inside, it has taken a big toll on him. He is a living victim and has definitely been let down by a series of medical blunders and miscommunications….”
From the chapter, "Medical Error – The third most common cause of patient death "
He remembered that he forgot to remove a baby spleen or splenculi, which was present and little away from the spleen during the operation.
“How could I forget such minute detail?” He thought, wiping off the hot sweat that was breaking out on his forehead.
As the whole focus of the operation was to remove all the spleen, he blamed himself still for forgetting about the baby spleen. He had been a surgeon for many years and shouldn’t have missed that.
‘’Is everything alright, Dr. Bruce?” said one of the team members noticing the change in his countenance.
He quickly recovered from his shock, made a fake smile and continued. “Sure. All is well”
These errors were kept as secrets from the patient, hoping that the baby spleen will likely not cause any problem later on. Eventually, the patient came for a check-up and was found to have the same problem. His blood platelet count kept falling and he had to commence on steroids and other medication. Further investigations revealed that he has a new spleen now, an enlarged baby spleen or splenculi had triggered the destruction of the platelets…
